Earthworms are the main food of inland migratory Oystercatchers but coastal residents prefer seafood.
Around one third of the Oystercatcher population winters in Iceland but the rest migrates to W-Europe.
There is a high diversity of small wetlands around lake Laugarvatn. Including this geothermal marsh which remains unfrozen in winter.
Bird hummocks form through accumulation of feces and undigested materials on the outlook posts of waders and are diagnostic of the Icelandic landscape.
